5 Keys for Social Media Success

Whether you love or hate social media it needs to be part of your small business marketing plan. Where to start? I have identified 5 keys to unlock the mystery of social media marketing.

1) Don’t Ignore your website! It’s not set it and forget it! It is your online store (even if you have brick and mortar). You wouldn’t send out a flyer or brochure with typos and this is the same. At least once a month look it over for typos, broken links and proper layout.

2) Engagement! - Social Media above all else is SOCIAL. Customers want to learn about and engage with businesses online. Engagement means that you are responding to customer comments, engaging in other conversations online that are relevant to your business, community or interests.

3) Be part of the community conversation. At this point you’ve seen at least a few pictures of Bernie Sanders and his mittens or Baby Yoda holding a cup on social media. You should be watching what your customers are talking about online and see how you can be part of the conversation. Use Adobe Spark or Canva to create quick content.

4) Movement - Your customers are bombarded with constant information. You need to create content that stands out and action in your posts can help with that. Add animation to your posts. Both Facebook and Instagram have ways to incorporate movement. (Boomerang anyone?) Don’t wait for perfection in terms of your video content. Customers expect and appreciate more DIY video posts from the small businesses they support. If you’re not comfortable with public speaking find a group you can practice that with like Speaker Sisterhood.

5) Post Regularly - If everyday is too much, start with a minimum of 2 times a week. Posts on Facebook and Instagram can be scheduled through Publishing Tools.
